“The Tooth And Nothing But The Tooth” By Chris ‘Dr Smile Maker’ Branfield

Being Inspired – From Wow To WOOW

alt

Hello there, I hope that you are well and doing fine.  I had a little operation on my foot a few weeks ago and all went well.  I was on ward 8 at Castle Hill Hospital and they were fantastic.  I felt that I was really cared for well and the place was really clean.  There is a lot of hospital bashing going on in the media but this was top notch, so thanks to the team there for your care.

From Wow To Woow? Is He On Some Medication Or What?

I was at a two day conference over Friday and Saturday just gone.  It was full of dentists and some brought some of their team.  It was not about the clinical stuff. You know, the stuff like how to make a filling look just like a tooth and how to change and transform a smile.  It was, though, about making people smile.  The conference was about giving extreme customer care and value within your dental practice.  At Castle Park Dental Care we call ourselves the home of life changing, pain-free dentistry because people have told us this to be true.  The life-changing bit is about giving people confidence to smile again or chew steak and eat in public without dentures falling down.  This is the wow.  The wow also comes from the little extra bits that other places don’t do or the things that you did not expect at the dentist.  I got a wow at Castle Hill Hospital as I wasn’t expecting some of the stuff other experiences.  The WOOW comes when the connection goes that bit deeper and we all start changing lives and it becomes a habit and happens automatically.  This I where B1G1 comes in.

OMG!  Has Dr Smile Maker Gone All Happy Clappy?

I haven’t gone all evangelical on you but I have been inspired!  I had the privilege to see Paul Dunn talk, and meet him.  He is the Chairman of B1G1 which stands for Buy One Give One.alt

This is an organisation founded by Masami Sato and set out to change the way that business is done throughout the world all for the greater good.  The premise is that every time you buy something or make a transaction then a donation is made to a project that can change and improve the lives of disadvantaged people.  It is a not for profit organisation and there arealt over 8 million giving activities available to choose from.  Clean water for children, mosquito nets, a goat can give a family an income for the rest of their lives (or the goats).

This is all life changing stuff.  I have signed up and paid up to get involved with this fantastic giving experience.alt

The Barmby Army Moves On

Hull City are still in with a shout.  They can play some good stuff and as I write they are in 5th position in the league and still in the cup.  I joined the official supporters club a couple of weeks ago with my son and we went to see three of the players in Beverley and Cottingham.  The mood in the camp is good so fingers crossed.  It’s been a bit cold and windy on the touch line watching the kids play but I wouldn’t miss it.

Until next time. Take care and be good.

Sunderland Dentist and the Biggest Ever Smile Winner

As 2011 drew to a close, leading Sunderland Dentist, Oliver's Dental Studio, joined forces with local newspaper the Sunderland Echo and Reds Hairstylist to change the life of a competition winner.

Out of countless entries from many people frustrated with their smile, lovely Ursula Smith of Sunderland was the lucky winner. Ursula caught the eye of Oliver's Principal dentist Michael Oliver, as she told the story of her shyness and reluctance to smile.

alt

A complete smile revamp was Ursula's dream, but up until now was out of her reach due to the cost restriction of being a busy working mum.

Her competition win has freed her from any cost worries and Ursula has now started down the road to the smile she always wanted, courtesy of Oliver's Dental Studio, Sunderland,  Telephone: 0191 528 2340.

Over the early weeks of 2012, Ursula will experience state of the art tooth whitening treatment combined with smile reconstruction using porcelain veneers.  Full mouth hygiene therapy and black for white filling replacements will complete this fantastic prize.

To complete the new Ursula, Reds will be offering hair and makeup treatments and David Lawson Photography will take a full studio portfolio of the new Ursula.

Watch this space for further developments on this exciting story!!

“The Tooth And Nothing But The Tooth” By Chris ‘Dr Smile Maker’ Branfield

alt

It’s In The Genes You Know

Hello again, I'm Dr Chris Branfield, Dentist in Hull, and a very happy new year to you. I hope that you had a good festive season and enjoyed it. As I write this we have just had the first smattering of snow. It’s a bit different to last year when we were snowed and iced up for about two months. Time yet though, we’ll see.  Mind you my daughter’s football match was cancelled at the weekend due to a frozen pitch. Also as I write I’m off for an operation on my foot that will put me out of commission for a few weeks.  It should be fine but wish me luck.  Patients of ours don’t worry as we have some cover.

Teaching your Grandmother To Suck Eggs

As the leading chairman and committee member of the Hull and East Riding section of the British Dental association, I am involved in organising courses for dentists and dental teams.  We get some really acclaimed speakers to come to Hull.  We had a recent study day and the Title was “Can we teach your grandmother a new egg sucking technique?”  I loved the title. It was about up to date current thinking and research on what we do as dentists in general dental practice.

Professor Callum Youngson who is head of the dental school at Liverpool came over to do most of the presentation.  He is a great guy, really down to earth with no messing about.  I’m glad he came because he taught me when I was at Leeds University and has had a large impact on how I do my dentistry. So thanks to him for coming over and to the dentists from throughout Yorkshire who came and got an entertaining and thought provoking day.

There is More Evidence Out And In The Papers

There has been some more research published and then a piece in the telegraph about the association between gum disease and ill health and cardiovascular disease in particular. Other conditions have been mentioned as well including low birth weight babies and infertility in males.  Have you seen the advert on the TV for Corsodyl mouthwash when the woman comes back and takes her eyelashes and makeup off and then finally her false tooth?   Well they do an advert in the dental press that shows a woman applying mascara and blood running down from her eyelid, it makes me shudder.

What’s The Point?

The point that they are trying to make is that you don’t expect this to happen i.e. bleed, just like you wouldn’t expect your hands to bleed when you brush them.  If they did you would see your doctor because you would think that something was very wrong.  If your gums bleed when you brush then there is inflammation that is usually caused by bacteria. The inflammation is gum disease and may be completely reversible with treatment e.g. gingivitis or be more advanced where bone has been lost. This can still be treated but needs a it more doing.  See, I’m not all doom and gloom!!

It’s In Who’s Genes?

Now I didn’t do Latin, I’m not that posh, but I think that gingiva means gum and it is means inflammation in Latin (please correct me if I’m wrong).  Therefore we get gingivitis. This is the start of gum disease and is reversible.  Peri means around (I think) and odont means tooth, and gum disease is called periodontitis, hey presto.  Dentists often call it perio disease.

Now not all gingivitis will progress on to aggressive gum disease ( when bone is lost very quickly around the teeth) but a lot will progress onto a slower rate of bone loss if not treated.  The genetic thing comes in mostly with the aggressive, fast progressing gum disease.  If your parents lost teeth early due to gum disease then you will probably at a higher risk too. It’s the luck of the draw again.  Here the goal post are different and the has to absolutely spotlessly clean to stop it.  This requires coaching, careful monitoring and treatment as appropriate and needs catching early on.  So if your gums bleed, don’t ignore it but get it looked at and sorted. Most of the treatment in the long term is how you do at home, your dentist alone cannot fix it but with a combination of treatment, coaching and excellent home maintenance we often see good results. It’s about teamwork!

Barmby Army

Hull City have just been on a good run and it was nice to beat Leicester.  I hope that it continues into the New Year.  They are capable of a top six place and you never know another trip to Wembley might be on the cards.  Is that a bit optimistic?  That was a great day at Wembley.

As well as my daughter playing football my son has decided at the age of 15 to join a team and plays Sunday League. A late starter, but doing well. My daughter’s team are still getting to grips with 11 a side and a big pitch so they have had a few heavy defeats but they get on with it with a smile, which is what it is all about.  So you can see how my weekends pan out. I love it though.

Until next time. Take care and be good.

Chorley Dentist Gave Me A Life Changing Experience

I had booked a whole day's appointment, on a Saturday, with lunch thrown in (anything I wanted from the local deli), tea and coffee breaks whenever I needed them; excellent and comfortable surroundings in a calm atmosphere with lovely, helpful, extremely professional people and much merriment and laughter to boot.

You might think I was describing a spa visit, or a shopping trip, or some kind of away-day health farm, but no.....this was a trip to the dentist! And not just any dentist, this was an angel of a dentist who dried my tears after I had turned up in agony from severe toothache, treated me like royalty, numbed and relieved me of my pain and set me on a course of long-needed treatment that has not only restored the health of my teeth and mouth but has had a more than positive affect on my general well-being.

Everything is explained very clearly; no treatment is given without true consultation; advice and help is needed whenever you wish. I even had follow up phone calls to see if I was doing OK. Now that's what I call first class treatment. Nothing is too much trouble and everything about the practice makes your misgivings about dentists disappear.

I was treated by Rashmi, who is truly the angel of pain relief and tooth restoration. David, her husband (also an angel!) was also there to give a helping hand and a smile, guaranteed to make you feel better. They are not judgmental about the state of your teeth and they have their patient's well-being at the heart of everything they do.

I was never rushed; Rashmi explained everything to me so that I could make the final choices about my treatment, without pressure and in my own time. She allowed me to talk about the problems I had been having and was keen to understand, not only the journey my teeth had taken, but also to learn about me as a person. Now you don't have that with most dentists.

I have never had any dentist take the time and care that Rashmi did. She is a highly skilled practitioner with such a delightful manner that it is always a positive experience visiting the practice.

The results have been amazing already. I am still half way through my treatment but I feel so much better and never believed my mouth could feel normal again!!

I cannot recommend this practice highly enough, and think everyone should have access to this highly professional team. They are simply superb! Diamonds of the dental world! I cannot thank them enough.

Brighton’s Dental Maverick, Nigel Kennedy Returns from Morocco Mission of Mercy

Brighton Dentist, Dr Nigel Kennedy, known for his unusual giving to those worse off, has just returned from the remote Rif Mountains region, in North Eastern Morocco.

A dental delegation of eleven UK dentists, and nurses saw, and treated 150 kids for severe dental decay!

The destination: a remote school in a fishing village, with 650 children and a high intake of honey, sweet mint tea, and no dental health service that contributes to extreme dental decay.

Dr Nigel Kennedy is usually found treating patients in his comfortable practice in Patcham, Brighton surrounded by modern day dental equipment, running water, and fabulous support team. Everything he could ever need.

Two mobile dental chairs were raised through fundraising, and were awarded to this particular region of Morocco for a visiting dentist.

altAnd a second chair was also donated to the El Jebah, Medical clinic which has no dental chair, until now!

Pain Free Dentistry is at the heart of all we do”, explains Dr Nigel Kennedy. And he further said, “This year the kids were entertained by games, colouring books and Dental Mavericks Mascot, Roger the Rabbit! It was such a great dental distraction, that the kids were asking for more  extractions.”

Nigel said, “I’ve been told that this will be most overwhelming experience of my dental career and a charity expedition I will never  forget.”

And Dr Kennedy and his wife Maria, financed their own trip plus the revenue they lost while away from his business.

Cally Gedge from the award winning Dental Mavericks outfit, who organised the annual expedition said, “This is our second year and this Moroccan community now relies on UK dentists to rid them from the daily pain of decayed teeth. There is no free or easy to access dental  care.”

Finally, Dr Kennedy has a long-term goal too, and a simple one. To fund a nurse who will visit the school weekly, educate children on tooth decay prevention, and bring in a dentist every month from the nearest town Chefchaouen , two and a half hours away, treating kids in pain.

Nigel told us about his future plans, “The El Jebah Teeth for Life Programme.”

If you’d like to view pictures of the beautiful Moroccan children, Roger the Rabbit, the mobile field chairs being presented to the local clinic and HD video, make any donations, or sponsor the ‘Moroccan Kids Teeth for Life’ programme, please visit www.dentalmavericks.org  or request HD photos of the ones your like.

Sunderland Dentist And His Morocco Charity Adventure

Sunderland Dentist, Michael Oliver has recently returned from North Africa as part of the Dental Mavericks Charity Dental Group formed in 2010

Michael and his senior receptionist Joanne, joined up with the Mavericks for a second year to help the children of the Rif Mountains with their severe dental problems.

The 12 strong Mavericks leave their comfortable life in Europe and bring some relief to the children of Northern Morocco and their dental problems. Hear their story.

Helping African Children 2011 - Dental Mavericks on tour in Morocco

What started as a ripple in 2010, with the first visit of the newly formed Dental Mavericks charity to beautiful Morocco in North Africa, this year grew into a wave of dental care in El Jebah, at the foot of the Rif mountains.

alt

Let me introduce you to the 2011 Dental Mavericks team, who for eight days stepped out of a privileged life in Europe, to help a group of school children who's lives aren't blessed with the dental care we take for granted.

The group, of which I am privileged to be a founding member, includes dentists and their support staff from across the UK and joined this year in their efforts from Belgium (Domien, our marvellous guide and translator) and Spain ( Team Gedge and the lovely Jess) .

Why do it ?

In our first visit last year, we were disturbed by the raging and untreated dental disease we found in the most beautiful of children in this lovely village in the foothills of the Rif Mountains.

The children, from age six to twelve, were suffering tremendous decay rates on the back of a high sugar intake consistent with Moroccan tradition of diet.

As well as sweet eating, the Moroccan mint tea and honey intake, coupled with poor to non existent oral hygiene and zero dental care are an explosive mix.

We found the youngsters to be carrying severe decay of their milk teeth and adult back teeth and of no surprise to the team, a frequency of dental abscess rare in Western children.

Our sights had to be lowered to cope with this acute disease, mainly by extraction of diseased teeth and an attempt at restoration and decay control where possible.

Our first visit was an emotional strain, as pioneering dental visitors to the area we had the difficulty of carrying out dentistry in school classrooms, perhaps not ideal.

So to 2011 and this years visit .......

Backed by the enormous generosity of patients and friends of the Dental Mavericks and some dental companies, in excess of five thousand pounds of funding was put to good use.....

The first priority was equipment and the three field dental chairs we bought which made a huge difference to the children's comfort .

alt

The photograph above shows the first of the chairs being handed over to a visiting Moroccan dentist for use in the village health facility. The kindness of Oliver's Dental Studio patients raised £500 to bring this chair to El Jebah.

As one of the dentists practicing in last years school class room, let me tell you this was an enormous step forward. The second major improvement was the purchase of significant quantities of Western dental equipment, including forceps and sterilisation products.

All of this added up to the pain free treatment of 160 children, non of which had seen a dentist since our visit last year.

Outstanding Individual of The 2011

Dentist Bracknell Dr Teresa Day at Appledore Dental Clinic is the Outstanding Individual of The 2011.

Teresa is always looking for ways to include charity work into her work and home life and at least 2 or 3 times a year does something major to raise money and ensure people are aware of issues that she feels need resolving, as well as raising funds for charity at home and abroad. This year (so far) she is also undertook the Winchester 100 mile bike ride for Action Medical Research.

alt

As a member of the Dental Mavericks she takes time out each year to go to Morocco for at least a week to ensure the Berber children receive dental treatment. Dr Teresa finds some of this quite traumatic as there is so much that she would like to achieve by treating the children herself but only so much she can do in such a short time.

Dr Teresa continually inspires the Appledore team keeping them on track – leading from the top and ensuring Appledore patients receive the care and attention that they come to expect.

She regularly comes up with ideas which enhance Appledore enabling our marketing to stay at the top of its game. She embraces new IT - which has been an interesting challenge as this is something that seems to update each day.

However, never one to resist a challenge Dr Teresa takes this on board and ensures Appledore IT is relevant and covers staff and patient’s expectations.

Milton Keynes Dentist Helps Babies & Children

Milton Keynes Dentist, Dr Teresa Day, rides in the rain to raise funds for babies and children in need of our help.

Winchester 100km
A Very Wet And Soggy Day (was supposed to be 100 miles)

I started early as I know I'm slow, especially where there are hills. I was 2nd out of the gate and rapidly overtaken by loads of people!! The weather forecasters were wrong, they said rain until 7am. But from 7.30 to 9.30, it just chucked it down, we all got completely drenched.

altThere were loads of punctures due to so much storm debris on the roads, luckily not me, and it gave me a chance to overtake people while they were fixing their punctures!

My feet got so wet and cold I had to take my shoes and socks off at a rest stop and wring out my socks! Believe me I don't ride my road bike in these conditions normally. Very winding route, short steep hills and then winding descents on slick roads, not very nice!

Near misses - with 2 vans coming in opposite direction whilst on a very narrow steep winding descent.

Got severe cramp in my feet at 67 miles, that's approx. 100km, and had to get taken to finish in the van. So I'm sorry to my sponsors that I did not make the 100 miles and hope you are happy with 100km.

Please click www.action.org.uk/sponsor/teresaday now to help raise funds for this fantastic children's charity.
